in front of coloured patterned brick
and roof tiles of a jewish merchant’s
house in a now royal city where jews
no longer live--monument at medical
clinic build where synagogue once
stood--gymnasium repurposed & i
photograph the house wanting the story

at the beograd book fair
or a related event david--whom
i only meet in beograd though he
now lives in calgary alberta--tells
me his family lost sixty of sixty-five
relatives to the germans during wwii
& i heard some serb say he’s not
a serbian writer he’s a jew
_
in kragujevac german rifles point
at me as i stand within shadowed
 long lines of rounded up jews
gypsies homosexuals artists and more
--over 2700 killed and mass grave
buried after giving up their identity
papers jewellery money freedom
then lives--remembered now
